Project Ifotaka

University of Durham Madagascar Expedition July-October 1999

 

Introduction


Project Ifotaka 1999 was an Anglo-Malagasy Conservation and research expedition involving 25 members from the UK and Madagascar. The project was run under a collaboration between the University of Durham, England, Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza, Madagascar and the Libanona Ecology Centre, Madagascar . The project ran from the 10th July – 2nd October 1999.

The studies were conducted in an area of Spiny forest to the North of the village of Ifotaka in southern Madagascar (Fiv de Amboasary-Sud). The forest, which has been identified by WWF as containing a great wealth of biodiversity, is approximately 30 000 ha in size and is currently unprotected. Research prior to this expedition was restricted to rapid inventories by WWF researchers. All work was carried out by kind permission of the Tripartite Commission of the Malagasy Government and the Dept of Eaux et Forets.
